Nationalism in 19th

Nationalism Extreme pride for one’s country or way of life
Unification People with the same culture but live in different countries come together
Separation People with a different culture try to break away from their country
State-building People with different backgrounds form a new country by accepting one culture
Nation States a country where the vast majority of their population share a common culture and identity
Realpolitik Leaders gain control by any means because power is more important than your morals
Multinational Empire an empire or country who controls many different cultures of people
Russification Forced the people of their country to speak one language and practice one religion
Anti-Semitism Cause many Jewish people to be segregated into Ghettos all over Europe during the late 19th century.
Zionism The belief that Jewish people should be able to create their own state
Manifest Destiny Belief that the United States had the right from God to rule North America from the Atlantic to the Pacific
Secession An area of land that withdrawals from the country
Nullification Idea that states were independent over the nation and could therefore stop/not follow any federal law
Jim Crow Laws Made it almost impossible for newly freed African Americans to vote or own property
Sharecropping A person rents a small portion of a large estate and in return the person must give the landowner a portion of the harvest before selling the rest
Mass Culture Occurred because people now had the time and money to listen, watch, and enjoy the same types of entertainment
Second Reich The Second German Empire after the Holy Roman Empire under Bismark
Hunger Strikes Occurred during the women’s suffrage movement to bring awareness to their cause
Irish Potato Famine fungus destroyed the main crop of the country, causing many people to flee or die
Irish Republican Army Group of nationalist citizens who formed a militia to fight for independence in their country
Dreyfus Affair A French officer was wrongly accused of selling secrets to the German Army simply because he was Jewish
Trail of Tears The forced migration of Native Americans, on foot, from their lands in the east to the worst available territories in the West.
Gadsden Purchase This land in southern Arizona and New Mexico created our current boundary with Mexico.
Fugitive Slave Act Said that all citizens, free or not, must capture and return slaves that have escaped
Emancipation Proclamation President’s statement that all southern slaves were free
13th Amendment Officially ended slavery in the United States
Reconstruction Time period when Northern Troops still occupied southern States to ensure the new laws were enforced
