What were some reasons not to explore the ocean? Sailors thought they would be eaten by sea monsters, they though the Earth was flat and you would sail right off the edge, and it was expensive to make such a voyage and it wasn't easy to get funding.
What were some reasons to explore? People wanted to find new trade routes to Asia so that goods would pass through less hands and therefore be cheaper to buy; wealth, fame, and glory, craved adventure and new knowledge, spread Christianity; break Muslim's/Italian's hold on trade.
What were some advances that helped Europeans explore? Cartography (mapmaking), improved ship design (the caravel), better navigational tools (compass and astrolabe), and better weapons to conquer natives.
