Age of Exploration

QuestionAnswer
What were reasons that people would not want to explore? Eaten by sea monsters, some people thought Earth was flat and cold sail off edge of world, and was very expensive and hard to get funding.
What were motives for exploration? New and easier trade routes to Asia for cheaper goods, people craved adventure and new knowledge, to spread Christianity, to break the Muslims' hold on trade, and to gain wealth, fame, and glory.
What advancements/tools made exploration easier? Advances in cartography (Mapmaking), improved ship designs (the caravel with triangular sail), new tools like the compass and astrolabe, and superior weaponry like cannons and muskets.
What what was the slaves' story in the New World? Millions of West Africans were taken as slaves by the Portuguese and Spanish to the New World. Spain and Portugal needed even more slaves to work on sugar plantations, even after taking thousands of native South Americans.
What impacts did the Age of Exploration have on the people of the West Indies (New World)? 1.)- Forced conversions to Christianity. 2.)- Millions of people die from overwork, starvation, and disease.
What impacts did the Age of Exploration have on the people of West Africa? 1.)- Millions of people taken by the Spanish or Portuguese and sent to Brazil or Europe.
What impacts did the Age of Exploration have on the people of Europe? 1.)- Prices of Asian goods like spices lowered. 2.)- The defeat of the Spanish Armada by England allowed England and the Netherlands to take power. 3.)- New foods like pineapples and potatoes introduced people to exotic foods.
What impacts did the Age of Exploration have on the people of Spain? 1.)- New foods from South America like corn and potatoes because they grew well in Europe and led to a population boom. 2.)- Gold and silver from the New World led to inflation that caused higher prices and made people poor.
What impacts did the Age of Exploration have on the people of the Aztec and Inca Empires? 1.)- War by the Spanish caused the two great empires to fall and made many people die or become slaves to the Spanish.
What impact did the defeat of the Spanish Armada have on the world? The defeat of the Spanish Armada caused a shift of power in Europe. Spain declined and other countries like England and the Netherlands took up trade and became powerful.
What economic systems grew because of the Age of Exploration? 1.)- Capitalism grew from people investing into things and trading and selling products from the New World across Europe and their colonies. This led to a market economy with supply and demand. Capitalism also led to small cottage industries in houses.
What is mercantilism and how did it grow and affect Europe? Mercantilism is an economic policy where countries try to get as much gold and silver as possible by controlling trade and having colonies. It grew when countries believed that the best way to get power was to amass as much wealth as possible with trade.
Market Economy An economy in which the people decide the prices by what they want or don't want (Supply and Demand).
Capitalism An economic system based around investing money (capital) for profit.
Inflation An increase in money more than an increase in goods, resulting in higher prices.
Circumnavigate To go completely around something, like the Earth.
Slavery Forced labor by one person or group to another person or group. (Ex: Spanish slavery against the Aztecs.)
Da Gama [Portugal] - First to discover a trade route to Asia around Africa and began Portuguese trade with India.
Cabral [Portugal] - Claimed eastern Brazil for Portugal.
Columbus [Spain] - First to discover and make Europeans aware of the existence of America and explore the islands between North and South America.
Magellan [Spain] - Was the first leader of the first voyage to prove that it was possible to circumnavigate the globe and proved that Columbus discovered the "New World."
Cortez [Spain] - Discovered and Conquered the Aztec Empire, opening the area for Spanish colonization.
Pizarro [Spain] - Discovered and conquered the Inca Empire and opened the area for Spanish colonization.
Hudson [Netherlands and England] - Discovered the Hudson River and gave way for Dutch colonization. Also discovered the Hudson Bay and gave England a claim in North America.
Cabot [England] - Discovered Canada and claimed land for England in the New World.
Da Verrazano [France] - Explored the Atlantic coast of North America and gave France its first claim in America.
