Trial Marriage cohabiting to assess whether partners are sufficiently compatible for marriage
Cohabitation Effect a phenomenon in which couples who cohabit before they marry are likely to divorce
Serial Monogamy an involvement in a single exclusive relationship followed by another exclusive relationship
Same-Sex Marriage marriage in which same-sex couples are united legally with all the legal rights guaranteed by the federal government to traditional married couples
Civil Union refers to same sex couples recognized in certain states without the legal rights guaranteed by the federal government to traditional marriedcouples
Domestic Partnership refers to same-sex couples or cohabiting couples reconized in certain states but without the legal rights guaranteed by the federal government to traditional married couples
Divorce legal termination of a marriage
Bigamy the act of entering into a marriage with on person while still legally married to another
Grandparent Family a type of family in which grandparents are responsible for raising their grandchildren
Sandwich Generation the generation that may be responsible for care for aging parents and young children at the same time
Empty Nest a home after the last child has left home
Spacious Nest the transition to more physical room in the empty nest home and more psychological space for the marital relationship
Renested Family or Cluttered Nest a home to which adult children have returned to live temporarily
Boomerang Kids adult children who return to live with parents temporarily
Ageism discrimination in the workplace or other areas because of age
Fixed Income is income from a pension, annuity, or other source that is frozen at a certain level; fixed incomes may be increased with cost-of-living raises
Assisted Suicide refers to the situation in which one person supplies the means for another to commit suicide in order to prevent suffering
Euthanasia it taking another person's life to prevent suffering
Passive Euthanasia is withholding treatment that would prolong life because the current quality of life is minimal
