 India is a piece of a continent that is crashing into the tectonic plate that holds Europe and Asia.  People settled this area very early in human history. (blank) (blank) (blank)
 Hindu Kush- Indus River (The early people came into the area through passes in the Hindu Kush, and settled in the Indus Valley. Most invaders also came to India this way.)  By about 2000 BC, well organized highly populate cities were functioning in the Indus Valley. (blank) (blank) (blank)
 Himalayas- Ganges River (Many people consider the Ganges to be a holy spot, and when they die they are cremated placed in the river for a swift trip to heaven.) Mohenjo-Daro  An early, planned city in the Indus Valley (blank) (blank) (blank)
 Himalayas and the Hindu Kush  Zone 1- Planners build the Citadel, a protective fortress, at the center of the city. It housed all of the military and government buildings. (blank) (blank) (blank)
. Climate- the dominant weather patterns in an area  Zone 2- Around that shops and stores popped up, because people already gathered there. (blank) (blank) (blank)
 The dominant feature of the climate in India is the monsoon, which is a hurricane like storm.  Zone 3- For convenience, people built their houses around that (blank) (blank) (blank)
 The monsoons cause the rivers to overflow, which causes a flood. This is the reason crops grow so well.  Zone 4- Outside of that people built the things that they didn’t want to have in the middle of the city. (blank) (blank) (blank)

(blank) (blank) Chandragupta-  A very harsh ruler, with ABSOLUTE power  Taxed peasants 50% of the food that they grew, Used that wealth to create a huge army,  He created a bureaucracy to deal with ruling his empire while he was terrorizing Northern India,  Chandra Gupta (no relation!)-  Came to power after 500 years of power struggles,  He married into a powerful family and became the king, After Chandra Gupta’s death his son, Chandra Gupta II rose to power,  The Persians are the world’s first real massive empire. They start the trend of the huge super-empires that we will see for the rest of the year (until almost the 1800’s A.D.) (blank) (blank)
(blank) (blank) Chandragupta-  He created a bureaucracy to deal with ruling his empire while he was terrorizing Northern India,  A prince ruled each of his four provinces (like a state),  Each prince split his province up into smaller areas (like counties). Chandra Gupta II-  Brings the Gupta Empire to it’s largest heights, moving the boundaries to the west coast of India. This makes it equal in size to the Mauryan Empire,  With increased trade due to ocean access, and taxes from productive farm land  The Persian’s are Aryans who did not migrate to India. The modern country in that is on Persian land is called Iran (after Aryan) (blank) (blank)
(blank) (blank) Asoka (269 B.C.)-  Chandragupta's grandson,  A very bad guy, vicious, cruel ruler, Nearly one million people were killed or deported in one battle due to him, this scarred him and turned him against violence Chandra Gupta II-  Each person used on month per year to work for the king on public works such as dams, levees, and drinking wells Cyrus the Empire-builder-  Used huge army and advanced war technology to conquer vast amounts of land,  Egypt, Greece, Asia Minor, Mesopotamia, the Middle East, and the Indus River valley all fell to Cyrus’s army,  Cyrus got to far from home and lost (blank) (blank)
(blank) (blank) Asoka (269 B.C.)- Converted to Buddhism,  He became a vegetarian, built hospitals to protect his people from suffering, Refused to hunt animals  Emperors supported the arts, and paid people to do them,  Learned to set broken bones so that people were not crippled for life,  Helped women survive childbirth, which was a very dangerous medical procedure in the ancient world Darius the Organizer- Local people can keep local customs and rulers, this kept them happy, Improved the ways to travel, travel is the key to holding a super-empire, The conquered people were expected to pay tribute (taxes), Established Pony Express (blank) (blank)
(blank) (blank) Asoka (269 B.C.)-  When he died, the empire collapsed. Much like Qin, his influence was to strong to let anyone else take over his power. The reasons, however, were opposite.  Math advances (Arabic numerals),  Inoculation- taking a dead or weak virus to let your body know what it is hunting later,  By the end of the Golden Age invaders were picking away at the edge of the Gupta Empire (a cousin culture of the Huns), Zarathustra and Zoroastrianism-  Zoroastrianism teaches the belief in 2 gods (good and evil) evil (blank) (blank)
