| interdict | in the Roman Catholic Church, excommunication of an entire region, town, or kingdom |
| black plague | Epidemic in the Middle Ages; killed half the population |
| manor | A large estate, often including farms and a village, ruled by a lord. |
| schism | split between roman and byzantine church |
| magna carta | the "Great Charter," in which the king's power over his nobles was limited, agreed to by King John of England in 1215. |

| papal supremacy | authority over all secular rulers |

| knights | in the Middle Ages, lesser noble who served as a mounted warrior for a lord |

| lord | in the middle ages, a noble who owned and controlled all activities on his manor |
| feudalism | loosely organized system of government in which local lords governed their own lands but owed military service and other support to a greater lord |
| vassals | lesser lords who pledged their service and loyalty to a greater lord -- in a military capacity |
