| adrenal glands | two endocrine glands, each above the kidney which produce hormones such as adrenalin and hydrocortisone |
| analysis | separating a substance into its component parts |
| anemia | deficiency of hemoglobin and or numbers of red blood cells which results in reducced oxygen to body cells |
| antepartum | before birth |
| antibiotic | pertaining to a substance that works against germor bacterial life |
| antibody | a substance that works against germs produced by white blood cells when germs enter the blood stream |
| antigen | foreign protein that stimulates white blood cells to make antibodies |
| aphasia | absence or impairment of communication through speech |
| apnea | not able to breath |
| atrophy | decrease in size of cells within an organ |
| benign | not cancerous, a tumor that does not spreadand is limited in growth |
| bilateral | pertaining to two sides |
| bradycardia | slow heartbeat |
| congenital anomaly | irregularity; a deviation from the normal |
| dialysis | complete separation of wastes from the blood when the kidneys fail |
| diarrhea | discharge of watery wastes from the colon |
| dysphagia | difficult swallowing |

| dyspnea | painful breathing |
| dysuria | painful of difficult urination |
| ectopic pregnancy | development of the zygote in a place outside the uterus |
