Review: Chapter 12: Cross-Cultural Exchanges on the Silk Roads

who were the Xiongnu? Pg. 233-234 A nomadic people from central Asia. They manaced the Han empire.
What was the Silk Road? Pg. 236-239 An ancient trade route that linked Xian, China to the Eastern Mediterranean and Rome. (Wasn't only by land, went into the Indian Ocean etc. too.) (See Monsoon Winds)
What was the Sasanid Empire? It was one of the three empires that broke from Persia after Alexander the Great died. I t was constantly at war with Rome.
What was the Edict of Milan? Pg. 250 The Roman Emperor Constantine promulgated it. It allowed Christains to practice their faith openly in the Roman empire.
Who was Han Wudi? Pg. 233-234,236 Chinese Emperor (reined 141-87 B.C.E.). He sent out Zhang Qian to recruit people against the Xiongnu.
What is Nestorian Christianity? Pg. G-7 It's an early branch of Christianity, named after the fifth-century Greek theologian Nestorius, that emphasized the human nature of Jesus Christ.
Who was Diocletian? Pg. 247 He was a Roman Emperor (reined 284-205 C.E.). He divided the Empire into two administrative units. Established tetrarch system.
Monsoon System/Monsoon Winds Pg. 235 Affected trade along the silk Roads because it was in the Indian Ocean. Summer: winds from SW, winter: winds from NE. To successfully trade without problems, they had to figure it out so that they could use it to their advantage and not be harmed by it.
What is Manichaeism? Pg. G-6 It is the religion founded by the prophet Mani in the third century C.E., a syncretic version of Zoroastrian, Christian, and Buddhist elements.
Who was Constantine? Pg. 247-248, 250 He was the emperor of Rome and he reined from 306-337 C.E. He was the son of Diocletian's coruler. He built the new capital: Constantinople. He also promulgated the Edict of Milan.
What is Dualism? Pg. 242 Views the world as the site of a cosmic struggle between the forces of light and darkness, good and evil. Light: spiritual awareness; darkness: material world. Doctrine said to reject worldly pleasures.
What are tetrarchs? Pg. 247 Diocletian founded it. He ruled with Calerius, Canstantius(Constantine's dad), and Maximian. There was often fighting between them because one always wanted to be in charge. Separated empire into 4 districts. Easier to administer vast empire.
