Mediterranean Society: The Roman Phase

Who was Octavian? Pg. 217 He was the man that took power after Julius Caesar was murdered. He was Caesar's nephew and protege. He was also his adopted son. In 27 B.C.E. the Senate changed his name to Augustus. He ruled for 45 years and fashioned an imperial government.
Who was Paul of Tarsus? Pg. 211-212 He was a prisoner being taken to Rome from Palestine. His ship shipwrecked and they spent 3 months on Malta before cathing a ship to Rome. He was exectuted for having become involved in a dispute between Jews and early proponents of Christianity.
Extraterritoriality: What is it? Citizens of a foreign government are treated differently than in the country they're in. Being exempt from the jurisdiction of the law. Kind of like diplomatic immunity.
Who was Julius Caesar? Pg. 217 A nephew of the general Marius, he favored liberal policies and social reform. By 46 B.C.E. he had made himself master of the Roman state and named himself dictator. He was stabbed to death in the Roman forum.
