Latifundia Organzied, enormous planatations.
Pax Romana "Roman peace". Existed for 2 1/2 centuries. Facilitated trade and communication throughout the region from Mesopotamia to the Atlantic Ocean.
Mare Nostrum "Our sea". The Mediterranean became essentially a Roman Lake.
Periplis Maris Erythraei "Sailing itinerary of the Red Sea". A remarkable piece of work, which described the ports on the Red Sea, East African, and Indian ports that Roman merchants commonly visited.
Paterfamilias "Father of the family". Eldest male ruled the household. Had the authority to arrange marriages for their children, determine the work/duties they could perform, and punish them as he saw fit. Could sell them into slavery and even execute them.
Mithraism A cult dedicated to the Persian deity Mithras.
