| adenocarcinoma | cancerous tumor derived from glandular cells |
| adenoma | benign tumor of glandular cells |
| amniocentesis | surgical puncture to remove fluid form the amnion sac |
| angioplasty | surgical repar of a blood vessel where a tube is placed in a clogged artery and a balloon at the end of the tube is inflated o flatten the clogged material against to wall of the artery, this enlarges the opening of the artery so that more blood can pass |
| anastomosis | new sergical connection between two previously unconnected bowel parts, vessels or ducts |
| angiography | x-ray recording of blood vessels after contrast is injected |
| arteriosclerosis | hardening of arteries |
| arthralgia | pain of a joint |
| arthopathy | disease of joints |
| atherosclerosis | hardening of the arteries |
| axillary | pertaining to the armpit or underarm |
| bronchitis | inflammation of the bronchial tubes |
| bronchoscopy | visual examinatoin of bronchial tubes by passing an endoscope through the trachea into the bronchi |
| carcinoma | cancerous tumor |
| cardiomegaly | enlargement of the heart |
| cardiomyopathy | desease of the heart muscle |
| chemotherapy | treatment with drugs |
| cholecystectomy | removal of the gallbladder |
| chronic | lasting a long time |
| colitis | inflammation of the colon |
| colostomy | removal of the colon |
| colocolostomy | new sergical connection between two previously unconnected portions of the colon |
| crainotomy | incision of the skull |
| cystitis | inflammation o th urinary bladder |
| dialysis | complete separation of waste from the blood when the kidneys fail |
| electroencephalography | process of recording the electricity in the brain |
| encephalopathy | disease of the brain |
| erythrocytosis | abnormal condition of red blood cells |
| esophageal | pertaining to the esophagus |
| esophagitis | inflammation of the esophagus |
| hematoma | mass or collection of blood |
| hematuria | abnormal condition of the urine |
| hemorrage | bursting forth of blood |
| hysterectomy | excision of the uterus, either through the adbominal wall or the vagina |
| infarction | area of dead tissue caused by decreased blood flow to that part of the body |
| inguinal | pertaining to the groin or the area where the legs meet the body |
| ischemia | deficiency of blood flow to a part of the body, caused by narrowing or obstruction of blood vessels |
| laparoscopy | visual examinatoin of the abdomen |
| laparotomy | incisoin of the abdomen |
| laryngitis | inflammation of the larynx |
| laryngoscopy | visual examination of the interior of the voice box with an endoscope |
| leukemia | increase in malignant white blood cells in blood and bone marrow |
| leukocytosis | slight increase in the numbers if normal white blood cells as a response to infection |
| mammogram | x-ray of the breast |
| mammography | process of making an x-ray recording of the breast |
| mammoplasty | surgical repair of the breast |
| mastectomy | removal of the breast |
| meningitis | inflammation of the meninges |
| menorrhagia | excessive bleeding from the uterus during the time of menstruation |
| menorrhea | nomral discharge of blood and tissue from the uterine lining during menstruation |
| myalgia | pain in a muscle |
| myelogram | x-ray image of the spinal cord after contrast is injected within the membranes surrounding the spinal cord in th lumbar area of the back |
| myeloma | malignant tumor originating in the bone marrow |
| myocardial | pertaining to the muscle of the heart |
| myoma | tumor of muscle |
| myosarcoma | tumor of muscle |
| necrosis | death of cells |
| oophorectomy | removal of and ovary or ovaries |
| otalgia | pain in the ear |
| pelvic | pertaining to the bones of the hip area |
| peritoneal | pertaining to the petitoneum |
| phlebitis | inflammation of a vein |
| phlebotomy | incision of a vein |
| pneumonia | abnormal condition of the lungsmarked by inflammation and collection of material within the air sacs of the lungs |
| pulmonary | pertaining to the lungs |
| radiotherapy | treatment of disease wiht high-energy particles such as x-rays and protons |
| renal | pertaining to the kidney |
| rhinoplasty | surgical repair of the nose |
| rhinorrhea | discharge from the nose |
| salpingectomy | removal of a fallopian tube |
| septicemia | infection in the blood |
| thoracentesis | surgical puncture of the chest to remove fluid |
| tonsillectomy | removal of the tonsils |
| tracheostomy | opening of the trachea to the outside of the body |
| uremia | abnormal condition of excessive amounts of urea in the blood stream |
