Toussaint L'Ouverture

-led an army of 100,000 slaves who drove out plantation owners. -was a former slave -forced the French to abolish slavery and took control of the colony's government 5 years later -defeated the French -was captured

was the richest of all Spanish colonies in the Americas but had to give more than half of its wealth to Spain every year which made most Mexicans very poor

-a poor mexican priest -told the people in his small church that "it was time for Mexicans to improve their own lives" -delivered the Call of Dolores" -inspired a crowed armed w/ clubs and pitchforks to march out of Dolores

-met a Spanish army on the march and was captured and executed

-carried on Miguel Hidalgo's struggle -called the National Congress to its 1st meeting and declared Mexico independent from Spain -was also executed by the Spanish two years later
