Latin America? A cultural region south of the US that has been strongly influenced by Spain, Portugal, and France.
Toussaint L'Ouverture -led an army of 100,000 slaves who drove out plantation owners. -was a former slave -forced the French to abolish slavery and took control of the colony's government 5 years later -defeated the French -was captured
Haiti was established in 1804
Mexico was the richest of all Spanish colonies in the Americas but had to give more than half of its wealth to Spain every year which made most Mexicans very poor
Miguel Hidalgo -a poor mexican priest -told the people in his small church that "it was time for Mexicans to improve their own lives" -delivered the Call of Dolores" -inspired a crowed armed w/ clubs and pitchforks to march out of Dolores
Miguel Hidalgo -met a Spanish army on the march and was captured and executed
Jose Maria Morelos -carried on Miguel Hidalgo's struggle -called the National Congress to its 1st meeting and declared Mexico independent from Spain -was also executed by the Spanish two years later
Agustin de Iturbide -was an officer in the Spanish army -had fought Morelos and Hidalgo -was able to defeat the Spanish -was a skilled military leader -declared himself Emperor of Mexico -dismissed the congress
How many years after Hidalgo 1st rang the church bell, was Mexico free? 11 years
Jose de San Martin -An Argentine General that led a fight for freedom using his skills to win Argentina's independence. -had been a Spanish officer
Simon Bolivar -started the war for independence for South America -drove the Spanish out of Venezuela -was defeated by the Spanish army a year later who had to flee for his life
