Terms to know about the Groth of Imperialism

QuestionAnswer
Imperialism One nation extends its control to the government and the economy of another nation.
Direct rule Under this system, they created a colony that was ruled directly by the home country
Indirect rule They might set up a protectorate.
Protectorate System in which people have their own government, but the home country has the final say on important matters.
Sphere of influence This was a region where the imperial power held the sole right to trade.
Sovereignty Or their right to pick their own government
Zulu war The European race to divide up Africa brought war to the continent's southwest coast.
Sepoy Rebellion Was the first major attempt to shake off British rule.
Sepoys Indian soldiers that protected the investments of The East India Company.
Viceroy Was sent to rule as the monarch's representative
Open Door policy Under such a policy, all nations would have equal trading rights in China.
Boxer rebellion By the late 1890s, secret societies had formed to help rid China of all outsiders.
