Vocabulary WordDefinition
Civilization A society with cities, a central government, job specialization, and social classes.
Cultural Diffusion The spread of ideas, customs, and technologies from one people to another.
Mesopotamia Greek term meaning the land between the rivers.
Dynasty A series of rulers from a single family
Fertile Crescent Region in the Middle East that was the birthplace of civilization
Neolithic Revolution The shift from food gathering to food production via farming which allows for growth of civilization
Nomads People with no permanent home, who move from place to place in search of food, water, or pasture
Primary Source A firsthand account of events written by people during the time period in which they occurred
Secondary Source An account or retelling of an event by someone who was not present at the event
Cuneiform The world's first system of writing
Delta A land form at the mouth of a river
Pharaoh An Egyptian god-king
Nile River The main river that flows north through Egypt
Mummification The process of embalming and drying a corpse to prevent decay
Hieroglyphics Egyptian system of writing coming from Greek meaning sacred carving
Papyrus Water reed plants that were split, dampened, pressed, and dried into a paper-like sheet
Monsoon Seasonal winds that bring powerful storms and flooding to India
Dynastic Cycle The historical pattern of rise, decline, and replacement of dynasties
Palestine Area east of the Mediterranean Sea
Daoism Chinese philosophy that seeks knowledge and understanding in nature
