Why were the Medes and Persians a considerable military power? Page 132 They possessed equestrian skills common to many steppe peoples. They were expert archers, even when mounted on horses.
Why was Cyrus an unlikely ruler? Page 132-133 He came from a mountainous region of Southwestern Iran, and in reference to the region's economy, some people called him Cyrus the Shepherd. However, he proved to be a tough, wily leader and a good military strategist.
Who built Persia's capital of Persepolis? Page 133-134 Darius, who was the greatest of the Achaemenid emperors. He started building it about 520 B.C.E. He wanted it to serve as not only an administrtive center, but also as a monument to the Achaemenid dynasty.
What was the Persian Royal Road? Page 135 It was partly paved with stone and stretched about 2,575 kilometers from Ephesus to anatolia, through Mesopotamia along the Tigris River. Caravans took some 90 days to travel this road, staying at inns along the well-policed route.
Who was Alexander the Great? Page 137 Invaded Persia (334 B.C.E.) w/ an army smaller than Persians'. Took over empire w/in a year of 331 B.C.E. Went to Persepolis, took wealth, paid respects to Cyrus & proclaimed himself heir to the empire. Set Persepolis on fire. (Perhaps intentionally.)
How did people get slaves? Page 140 There were 2 main ways: Most were prisoners of war who became slaves in order to survive. Usually they were in military units, but Persians also enslaved civilians who resisted. Others were free subjects who acquired too much debt and couldn't repay it.
