What is philosophy? It is a person's view of things: questions are asked to understand certain things.
Who was Galileo? An Italian who better developed the microscope. Also, accused of heresy, he rescinded his prior scientific statements--but never changed his own belief.
What is Sir Francis Bacon known for? Development of the "Scientific Method" and based it on how to correctly perform an experiment.
What is the "Age of Reason"? The ideas that were floating around during the Scientific Revolution. Everyone was asking questions, especially "Why?" Also, people were, in general, wanting reasons for things happening.
How were all these new and, now, proven ideas organized so that they were accessible at the reach of a hand? Sets of encyclopedias
Who was Isaac Newton? He was a scientist who developed the theory of gravity and developed the field of mathematics known as calculus.
What was the central question for most all scientists during the Scientific Revolution? "WHY?"
What were the two most important instruments to help scientists look "outward" and "inward" to discover new worlds? Telescope and Microscope
What Renaissance invention helped to spread these new ideas, theories, and writings of the Sci. Rev.? Guttenburg's Printing Press
What three things did people rely on for the evidence of new theories (hypotheses) to be proven true? Generalization, Observation, and Experimentation
Who was it that studied astronomy (comets and Supernovas) through the use of an observatory? Tycho Brahe
What is the term for a statement that is made against a known law (either religious, scientific, or political) when no one else has ever been taught any differently (hint: many scientists were accused of this during the Scientific Revolution)? heresy
When did the Scientific Revolution begin? mid-16th century
What defines a "free thinker"? People who are willing to THINK about things freely--without any preconceived ideas, AND are willing to accept change if it is proven true.
What does revolution mean? a rapid change
Conrad Gesner is known for what? Classifying around 6000 species. He is also known as the "Father of Modern Zoology"
This man who was ancient Greek said, "the earth is the center of the universe, but all other planets (stars) revolve around it in a straight line." Ptolemy
This amateur scientist studied plants, human anatomy, art, and other sciences. He was also not a part of the actual period of the Sci. Rev. Leonardo da Vinci
What is Nicolaus Copernicus so well-known for? He said the sun is the center of the universe and all planets, including Earth, revolved around it.
Why did Nicolaus Copernicus wait until right before his death to publish his final book? He didn't want to be accused of heresy by the Catholic Church.
Many of the scientists, studied in class, were the first geniuses who began challenging the laws of nature--as they had learned it. What might these men be known as in modern science? Pioneers
Where and How was the last book that was written by Galileo published? It was smuggled out of Italy and published in the Netherlands (Holland).
