The French Revolution

Old Regime the social and political system in France that divided the people into estates and remained until the French Revolution

Tennis Court Oath A pledge made by the members of France’s National Assembly, in 1789 in which they vowed to continue meeting until a new constitution was drawn up.
Great Fear A wave of senseless panic that spread through the French countryside after the storming of the Bastille in 1789.
Guillotine A machine for beheading; used for executions during the French Revolution
Reign of Terror The reign of Maximilien Robespierre in France during which thousands of political figures and citizens were executed
Coup d’état A sudden seizure of political power in a nation
Plebiscite A direct vote of a nation’s people
Napoleonic Code A comprehensive and uniform system of laws established for France by Napoleon
Battle of Trafalgar A naval battle in which Napoleon and the French forces were defeated by the British
Waterloo The final defeat of Napoleon as a military leader
Holy Alliance League of European nations formed by Prussia, Austria, and Prussia after the Congress of Vienna
Congress of Vienna Series of meetings in 1814-1815 where leaders tried to establish peace after the defeat of Napoleon.
Concert of Europe A series of alliances in Europe in 19th century designed to prevent the outbreak of revolutions
