| Exudate | Material, such as fluid and cells, that had escaped from blood vessels during the inflammatory process. |
| Serous exudate | Consists chiefly of serum, which is the clear portion of the blood. Clear and watery. |
| Sanguineous exudate | Red and consists of red blood cells. Results when capillaries are damaged, allowing the the escape of red blood cells, and is frequently seen in open wounds. |
| Purulent exudate | Contains pus, which consists of leukocytes, dead liqufied tissue debris, and dead and living bacteria. Usually thick and has an unpleasant odor. |
| Suppuration | The process of pus formation. |
| Serosanguineous exudate | Consists of clear and blood-tinged drainage and is commonly seen in surgical incisions. |
| Purosanguineous exudate | Consists of pus and blood and is often seen in a new wound that is infected. |
