Wound Drainage

QuestionAnswer
Exudate Material, such as fluid and cells, that had escaped from blood vessels during the inflammatory process.
Serous exudate Consists chiefly of serum, which is the clear portion of the blood. Clear and watery.
Sanguineous exudate Red and consists of red blood cells. Results when capillaries are damaged, allowing the the escape of red blood cells, and is frequently seen in open wounds.
Purulent exudate Contains pus, which consists of leukocytes, dead liqufied tissue debris, and dead and living bacteria. Usually thick and has an unpleasant odor.
Suppuration The process of pus formation.
Serosanguineous exudate Consists of clear and blood-tinged drainage and is commonly seen in surgical incisions.
Purosanguineous exudate Consists of pus and blood and is often seen in a new wound that is infected.
