Annexation absorbing or taking control of another country’s territory
Armistice Agreement to end all fighting during war
Attrition war tactic where one side attempts to win simply be wearing down the enemy through tons of small attacks which gradually lead to mass casualties
Commercial Farming purpose is to produce a large amount of food for sale off the farm
Corporation Business owned by stockholders
Direct Colonial Control Officials from the home country control their colonies
Ethnic Cleansing The forcible removal of a particular group of people with little regard for their well-being, often leading to mass casualties
Factions Different groups of people with varying perspectives on the government (like a political party).
Globalization where something that was originally a local idea or product becomes global
Indirect Colonial Control Local leaders run the colonial country on behalf of the colonizer
League of Nations An association of nations that would work together to promote peace and avoid another world conflict after WWI.
Margin Buying People pay for part of a stock and borrow the rest of the money from a Stock Broker
North Atlantic Treaty Organization treaty between the United States and Western Europe vowing to protect each other if one is attacked
Nullification Idea that states were independent over the nation and could therefore stop/not follow any law the federal government proposed
Palestinians Muslims living within the country Israel
Panic A widespread fear concerning financial matters that makes people take extreme measures to protect their money
Reconstruction Time period after the civil war when Northern Troops still occupied southern States to ensure the new laws were enforced
Public Work Programs Government plan that provides jobs building public facilities such as schools, roads, etc. to increase employment and end economic depressions
Self-Determination idea that ethnic groups have the right to govern themselves
Secession An area of land that withdrawals from the country
Sharecropping a person rents a small portion of a large estate and in return the person must give the landowner a portion of the harvest before selling the rest
Speculation When someone continues to buy more and more stocks because they believe the price will continue to go up and up
Sphere of Influence a country only controls the economic trade of another country
Subsistence Farming most of the food produced is consumed by the farmer and his family. Very little will actually go to market for sale
Warsaw Pact Treaty between the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe to create a buffer between the Soviets and Non-communist Western Europe
