| Vladimir Lenin | Creator and leader of the Bolshevik Party in Russia. becomes first leader of the Soviet Union in 1917 |
| New Economic Plan (NEP) | Economic policy proposed by Lenin to slowly modernize Russia. Peasants could sell their extra crops and some businesses were privately owned (while others were owned by the government) |
| "Peace, Bread and Land" | Slogan promised by Lenin to the Russian people. Peace - Russia would leave World War I Bread - Food Land - Redistribute land to the serfs originally owned by the Orthodox Church and Nobles |

| Bloody Sunday | Protest of 200,000 angry proliteriat demanding more workers rights and freedoms outside the Czar's Winter palace. Czar Nicholas II soldiers open fire on the crowd killing many. Creates riots throughout Russia |
| Collectivization | Policy proposed by Stalin. All privately owned farms were taken from the peasants to create large, more efficient and industrialized ones. Peasants then forced to work on them. |
| Five year Plans | Stalin's plans to quickly modernize(industrialize) the Soviet Union. Greatly increases coal, electricity, oil and steel production after 1940. |
| Great Terror/Purge | Stalin "purges"(removes) all who oppose him. Millions either executed or sent to gulags to work and die. Death toll: 20 million Soviet people. |
| KGB | Stalin's secret police. Help carry out the great Terror/Purge. |
| Gulags | Work camps where prisoners work in horrible conditions (Freezing temperatures, little food). Most inmates die within 2 years |
| Joseph Stalin | Second leader of the Soviet Union after Lenin. Rules with an iron fist but modernizes the Soviet Union |
| Karl Marx | Father of communism. Writes the "Communist Manifesto" with Engels in 1842. His beliefs are adopted by the Bolshevik (Communist)party in Russia. |
