WHAP! Unit One

QuestionAnswer
Agrarian This is defined as the cultivation of land or farming. In WHAP! this would be used to describe the period in which homo sapiens began to use systematic agriculture (neolithic) instead of hunting and gathering (paleolithic).
Communal Used or shared by the whole community. In WHAP! things such as homes and food were shared a lot through out time. For example, Indians would sleep in one giant house with each family having their own section.
Filial The relationship between a child and their parent. In WHAP! some cultures look upon this in a very high manner. In China, the relationship between a child and their parents is much like that of a religious person and God.
Monarchy The supreme power or sovereignty held by a single person (hereditary figure). In WHAP! throughout many periods of time people of higher power, like Kings and Dictators, held sole power of the Nation/Kingdom/State/Etc. they controlled.
Pastoral A poem/play dealing with the life of shepherds. In WHAP! many play writes focused on the life of pastoralists (shepherds) because it represented a life where man lived in harmony with nature.
Subsistence The source from which food and other items necessary to exist are obtained (to give support). In WHAP! many times in history people(s) have needed help surviving and help was giving by the government/kingdom.
Archaeology The study of historic/prehistoric people and their cultures by studying artifacts, inscriptions,monuments, and other remains. In WHAP! archaeology is used to find out more about the past and write out the history of the past.
Edifice A building, especially that of a large size. In WHAP! many civilizations built ever lasting buildings that still remain today. i.e. Pyramids, Temples, Halls, etc. etc.
