Unit 1 Historical Jargon

QuestionAnswer
Agrarian Definition- Relating to the land; referring to the advancement of agricultural groups; farmers. An agrarian society relies on agriculture as its main source of sustenance.
Archaeology Definition- The scientific study of historic and prehistoric people and their culture by analysing artifacts and other remains, usually excavated. Archaeologists primarily deal with physical remains.
City-State Definition- A sovereign state consisting of self-governing city which isn't governed by another government. An example of a city state would be Athens inGreece or the Vatican City in Italy.
Civilization Definition-A civilization is a society or group of people trying to achieve a higher state of social developement. An example of a civilization is Mesopotamia.
Communal Definition- Something shared by all members of a society. A bathroom that belongs to everyone in a community would be a communal bathroom.
Edifice Definition- 1. A complex concept. 2. A large, important building. Einstein's theory of relativity is an edifice. A multi-story courthouse is an example of an edifice.
Egalitarian Definition- The belief that everyone should be treated equally and have equal rights; an egalitarian can also be a person. Martin Luther King jr. had egalitarian beliefs about how black people should be treated the same as white people.
Era Definition- A time period in history that has similar cultural and/or historical characteristics. The Paleolithic era is the time of the hunter-gatherers.
