acropolis hilltop fortress of an ancient Greek city-state.
oligarchy Form of government in which the power is in the hands of a small, poerful elite, usually in the business class.
democracy Form of government in which the people hold ruling power.
tyrant People who gained power by force.
Persian War War between Athens and Persia, in which Athens was victorious and emerged from the war as the most powerful city-state in Greece.
Pericles Under his leadership, the government of Athen became more democratic and economy thrived. He turned Athens into the cultural center of Greece.
Direct democracy Athens had this form of government in which a large number of male citizens took part in the day to day affairs of the government.
Peloponnesian Wars War between Athens and Sparta which ended Athens greatness.
rhetoric the art of skillful speaking
tradgedy Plays that tell stories of human suffering that usually end in disaster.
comedy humorous plays that mocked people or customs.
Plato Student of Socrates and author if the Republic, who emphasized the importance of reason to help people discover unchanging ethical values, recognize perfect beauty, and learn how to organize an ideal society.
Socrates A wandering teacher who urged his students to question and examine all around them.
Aristotle Student of Plato who set up the Lyceum, a school for the study of all branches of knowledge.
Macedonia Lead by Phillip, all of Greece was brought under Macedonnian control. Under his son, Alexander, they gained control of Egypt, Persia and Asia Minor.
Alexander Responsible for the speading of the Hellenistic civilization.
Hellenistic culture A blend of Greek, Persian, Egyptian and indian influences.
