The World Economy
| Christopher Columbus | funded by Ferdinand and Isabella; found America in 1492; takes back exotic birds and tobacco to Spain |
| Ferdinand Magellan | Portuguese, sailed for Spain; circumnavigated the world; named Pacific Ocean; died in the Philippines |
| British East india Company | A joint stock company that controlled most of India during the period of imperialism. This company controlled the political, social, and economic life in India for more than 200 years. Companies monopolized Asian trade. |
| World Economy | Created by Europeans during the late 16th century; based on control of the seas; established an international exchange of foods, diseases, and manufactured products |
| Columbian Exchange | Millions of Native Americans died. New World -> Europe: corn and potatoes Europe -> New World: disease, horses, and cattle |
| Lepanto | 1571- Naval battle between the Ottoman Empire and Spain. Spain won, proving European superiority |
| Core Nations | European nations that profit from the world economy; import raw materials then export manufactured items |
| Dependent Economic Zones | produce raw materials; dependant on Europeans for entry into the world market; provide cheap labor |
| Vasco De Balboa | Spanish explorer who became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean in 1510 while exploring Panama |
| New France | French colony in North America, with a capital in Quebec, founded 1608. New France fell to the British in 1763. |
| Atlantic Colonies | British colonies in North America along atlantic coast |
| Treaty of Paris | England got India; France got Canada |
| Cape Colony | Dutch colony established at Cape of Good Hope in 1652 initially to provide a coastal station for the Dutch seaborne empire; by 1770 settlements had expanded sufficiently to come into conflict with Bantus. |
| Boers | Dutch who settled in Capetown, Africa |
| Calcutta | Headquarters of British East India Company in Bengal in Indian subcontinent; located on Ganges; captured in 1756 during early part of Seven Years' War; later became administrative center for all of Bengal. |

| Mercantilism | European economic policy of the 16-18centuries. Each country must adopt policies to obtain as much wealth as possible for itself; key to the attainment of wealth was the acquisition of colonies. Limit imports besides raw materials. |
