Define: Industrial Revolution The shift from hand to machine production of goods; new methods of production formed.
Define: Proletariat New class of people created by the Industrial Revolution: landless, wage-earning, city-dwelling, factory-working poor people.
Why did the Industrial Revolution start in England? 1. They had all the natural resources needed (coal, iron, wood). 2. Favorable geography (falling water for mills, good harbors). 3. Good banking system [to lend money for starting businesses].
What industry was first struck by the Industrial Revolution? The Textile Industry
Who was Karl Marx? The Father of Communism/Socialism/Marxism.
Define: Communism A form of government inspired by the Industrial Revolution which sided with the Proletariat believing that no one should be rich or poor. Main Goal: Equality
Who was Adam Smith? The Father of Capitalism/"The Free Market"
Define: Capitalism A form of government which accepted greed believing "Necessity is the mother of invention" and therefore believe that government should not get involved in businesses. Main Goal: Liberty
Define: Laissez-faire "Let it alone"-Government should leave people alone in their businesses.
What did the Casta System of Latin America depend mainly on? Who one's parents were.
How did one's placement in the Casta System of Latin America affect their life? It defined what kind of job one could have.
Define: Peninsulares Spanish people born in Spain (top of the Casta).
Define: Creoles Spanish people born in the New World (second highest placement in the Casta).
Define: Mestizo The child of a Spanish parent and a Native American parent (third highest placement on the Casta).
Define: Mulatto The child of a Spanish parent and an African parent (fourth highest placement on the Casta).

Who revolted against who in the Haitian Revolution? Haitian slaves revolted for freedom from France [only successful slave revolt].

What were the Latin American revolutions influenced by? The American and French Revolutions.
Define: Nationalism A feeling of loyalty to the national group you belong to.
Define: National-Group A group of people who share a common language, culture, and have a sense of patriotism. Also sometimes called an "ethnic" group.
Define: Nation State A government organization in which an ethnic group creates a government to protect the interests of their members. It is a way to Safeguard the unique identity of their group. These would have definite borders.
What was "the birth of Irish Nationalism"? The Irish Potato Famine (The Great Hunger).
How did the Irish protests change on The Easter Rebellion/Rising? It was the beginning of armed resistance against England.
Who was the Irish War for Independence against? England
What new military group was formed during the Irish War for Independence? The IRA.
Who fought in the Irish Civil War? The Irish people who accepted having only partial independence and the Irish people who wanted full independence.
What part of Ireland was fought over during "The Troubles"? Northern Ireland
What was the "Good Friday Accord"? A ceasefire/armistice between Ireland and England.
Define: Zionism The movement to create a Jewish nation.
Who was Theodor Herzl? The founder of the movement to create a Jewish nation.
Where did the Jewish wish to create their nation? Palestine
Before Italian nationalism, what was the most important of the independent Italian states? Sardinia, ruled by Savoy.
Who was Guiseppe Mazzini? A man who wrote about Italian patriotism.
Who was Camillo di Cavour? A man who led the war with Austria to conquer Italian lands for Sardinia.
Who was Guiseppe Garibaldi? A man who led the para-military forces (called the Red Shirts) into southern Italy to unify it?
Who led "the Red Shirts"? Guiseppe Garibaldi
Who became the King of Italy once it became a nation? Victor Emmanuel II, the former King of Sardinia.
Before German nationalism, what was the most powerful of the independent German states? Prussia, ruled by the Hohenzollern family.
Who was Otto von Bismarck? Also known as "The Iron Chancellor," the Chancellor of Prussia.
What was the Franco-Prussian War? The war with Denmark, Austria, and France to bring all German speaking lands under Prussian rule.
