Reading Notes Questions for Chapter 4

| How did towns become independent? | Purchasing royal charter, revolting. |
| What contributed to the growth of towns? | The improvement in agriculture, the revival of trade, baking industry. |
| What rights did a charter give townspeople? | It gave them the right to govern themselves, make laws, and raise taxes. |
| Why were guilds established? | They provided help and protection for the people doing certain kind of work. |
| What role did merchants play in the growth in towns? | They were sometimes council members and they brought people to town with trade. |
| Why was growing up in towns difficult? | Half of the children died before becoming adults and sometimes stated as adults at age 7. |
