Reading Notes Questions for Chapter 4

QuestionAnswer
What was produced? Food, clothing, woolen cloth, glass, silk, etc.
How were goods distributed? By river, markets, roads, trade routes, merchant fairs.
What were the common homes like? Made of wood, crowded, small, bad construction, cramped, narrow, tall, cold, smokey, dirty, uncomfortable.
Who held power? Merchants, mayor, town council, craftsmen.
How did towns become independent? Purchasing royal charter, revolting.
What contributed to the growth of towns? The improvement in agriculture, the revival of trade, baking industry.
What rights did a charter give townspeople? It gave them the right to govern themselves, make laws, and raise taxes.
Why were guilds established? They provided help and protection for the people doing certain kind of work.
What role did merchants play in the growth in towns? They were sometimes council members and they brought people to town with trade.
Why was growing up in towns difficult? Half of the children died before becoming adults and sometimes stated as adults at age 7.
