What group, ideology, was the "winners" of the 1800's? Conservatives
What was the basic belief of the Conservatives? didn't like change (pre-1789 Europe)
Why didn't the Conservatives like change? they thought change = chaos (exp. Napoleon, Reign of Terror)
Which ideological groups wanted change? Liberals and Nationalists
What were the levels of the most Conservative? Church leadership, Nobles, Monarchs, Peasants
What groups of people believed in the Liberal ideology? middle class, city workers including peasants
What did the Liberal peasants want? a constitution, voting rights, limited and separated government
In general the Liberals wanted to be like which countries? USA and Britain
What was the Nationalists ideology? their nation to be an independent state
What did the Nationalists think about violence? needed to cause violence or revolt to gain independence
What revolts occurred in the Balkans? there were several against the Ottoman Empire
What did the Serbs gain by revolting? gained autonomy or control of day to day affairs
Did the Serbs win their revolt? the lost badly as they still belonged to another country, even thoug they gained autonomy
Who was the 1st group to revolt in the Balkans? Serbs
When did the Greeks revolt? 1821
When the Greeks revolted they showed they were good fighters
How did the Greeks win? because French, British, and Russians stepped in to keep order
After the French, British and Russians stepped into the Greek revolt they ........... forced Greeks to take a German king
