Why was the Niger river was so important to the people of West Africa? The Niger river was so important because it was the main trading area. It also provided fresh water and fish.
Why did North Africa trade salt for gold and why did West Africa trade Gold for salt. North Africa had lots of salt and very little if any gold. West Africa had lots of gold and very little salt.
