A Closer Look At Baptism

| How does baptism allow christians to be freed from original sin? | In baptism we are born to new life and the holy spirit fills us, freeing us from original sin. |
| Compare Baptism today to Baptism in 1st century Israel. | Baptism was performed in bodies of water, the whole body was immersed in water. Now water is poured on the head. Most people who were baptised were adults and now it is mostly infants. Before being baptised, a training called catechumenate was received. |
| Why do people get baptised? | To be welcomed into the church, be reborn as a follower of christ and to be freed from all sins. |
| Where does the word baptism come from? | The greek verb baptizein, which means to immerse in water. |
| Explain how church is more then just a group of people. | The church is the body of Christ and we become part of this body at baptism when we receive a special character that unites us permanently to Christ. |
| Why was immersion preferred more than pouring water on the head? | It was thought that immersion purified the whole body. |
| Define Baptism but use the key words: immersion, promises, initiation and Church. | Baptism celebrates the beginning of new life in the Church. Baptism is a sacrament of initiation which promises salvation. It is done by immersion of water or sprinkling. |
