| Entente | a non-binding agreement that two countries will follow common policies diplomatically and militarily |
| Militarism | Policy that glorifies war and views traditional warfare as romantic |
| Neutrality | supporting neither side in a disagreement/war |
| Front | the area of conflict between 2 opposing sides in war |
| Trench Warfare | major style of combat in WWI where the goal was to take the others dug out area. It was inefficient, lead to mass casualties and little progress. |
| Total War | all resources and people are mobilized during the war effort at home and in battle |
| Draft | also called conscription, this is when the government required young men to join the military |
| Propaganda | Advertisements that promote a cause or damage an opposing cause by exaggerating the ideas |
| War Communism | method of turning business by business, farm by farm into communal land run by the government or public |
| Doughboys | Nickname for the American Soldiers who were fresh and new compared to the European soldiers |
| Armistice | Agreement to end all fighting during war |
| Isolationism | Foreign policy where a country chooses to stay out of world affairs |
| Hague Tribunal | world courts system in the Netherlands which is used to settle disputes between nations |
| Powder Keg of Europe | Nickname for The Balkan Peninsula because one small spark could ignite all of Europe in war |
| The Black Hand | A Serbian nationalist group in Bosnia that sought to gain independence from Austria-Hungary militarily |
| Gavrilo Princip | Killed the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sofia of Austria-Hungary, becoming the spark that would set off WWI |
| Schlieffen Plan | Plan by Germany to invade France by first invading Neutral Belgium and using it to stage its attack on France. |
| Central Powers | Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire |
| Allied Powers | Great Britain, France, Russia, Japan, Italy |
| Battle of the Marne | Held Germany off long enough for Russia to mobilize for war, causing Germany to fight a two front war |
| March Revolution | The czar or emperor of Russia (monarchy) was overthrown due to their inept military and leadership creating a republic |
| Bolshevik Revolution | Russian republic was overthrown by the Communists due to continued weak leadership |
| Vladimir Lenin | First Communist leader of Russia who wanted to create a dictatorship of the working class in Russia |
| Lusitania | British vessel that was suck by the Germans, but also carried US citizens, causing the US to consider entering the war |
| Zimmermann Note | Asked the Mexican Ambassador to support Germany in the War in exchange for gaining back U.S. lands. When the US found out, they declared war on Germany. |
| Woodrow Wilson | President of the United States during WWI |
| The Fourteen Points | Ideas set forth to avoid world conflict again including things such as freedom of the seas, reducing arms, and self determination |
| League of Nations | An association of nations that would work together to promote peace and avoid another world conflict. |
| Treaty of Versailles | Germany was forced to sign this to end WWI and therefore admit they were the sole cause of the war, they had to pay reparations, disarm, give Alsace and Lorraine back to France, and lost all their colonies. |
