Islam Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
What is a caliph? A Muslim ruler
What is a caravan? A group traveling together, often with a pack of animals such as mules or camels.
What is the Kaaba? A religious shrine
What is Medina? The city Muhammad and hi supporters moved to in 622 in a journey known as the Hijrah.
What is a mihrab? A niche in the wall of all mosques, indicating the direction of all prayer.
What is a minaret? A tower built onto a mosque from the top of which the call to prayer is made.
What is a minbar? A raised pulpit in the mosque where Imam stands to deliver sermons.
What is a mosque? A Muslim house of worship
What is a muezzin? A person who calls Muslims to worship
Who was Muhammad? The prophet who received revelation (the Quran) from Allah
Who is a Muslim? A person who submits to the teachings of Muhammad.
Who are nomads? People who have no permanent home, moving from place to place in search for food, water, and pasture.
What is the Quran? The holy book of Islam
What is Shariah? Muslim code of law
Who are the Shiites? Smaller group in Islam who believe the ruler should be a man who was a direct descendant of Muhammad.
Who are the Sunnis? The larger group in Islam that believe any truly religious Muslim man of Muhammad's tribe could lead the community.
What are the 5 pillars? 1. Shahada - Declaration of faith 2. Salat - Prayer 3. Zakat - Almsgiving 2.5% of salary 4. Sawm - fasting during Ramadan 5. Hajj - pilgrimage to Mecca
