How did China's religion and philosophies shift after the collapse of the Han Dynasty? Since Confucianism wasn't working, they found hope in Buddhism and Daoism.
What was another factor that lead to the disuse/practice of Confucianism? Nomads (barbarians) brought in Buddhism and Daoism.
After the collapse of the Han Dynasty, what did the Sui Dynasty do to reunify China? They built a canal system.
How long was the canal? A whopping 1,200 miles. Go Ancient China, you canal builders, you.
How did the Sui's canal help China? It boosted trade.
What went on in the "Golden Age of Chinese Achievement" culturally? Poetry, paintings (landscapes), ceramics, Neo-Confucianism, and large cities.
What is Neo-Confucianism? A new form of Confucianism with Buddhist and Daoist ideas.
What went on in the "Golden Age of Chinese Achievement" politically? The Tang and Song dynasties built a state structure that endured for a thousand years. DANG CHINA
What went on in the "Golden Age of Chinese Achievement" economically? They became the richest empire and the most commercialized place on earth! DANG CHINA
What kind of industries were popular during the "Golden Age of Chinese Achievement"? Printing, gunpowder, and shipbuilding.
How were woman's lives in the Tang Dynasty? They had more Freedom because of nomadic influence.
How were woman's lives in the Song Dynasty? UH OH. Bad news ladies, Confucianism is back and we're richer than heck so I'll take that weaving job and you could go bind your feet. Little feet are sexy.
What kinds of tjobs could women hold in the Song dynasy? They could be maids, cooks, or shop-workers. If you were wealthy, good for you, you were a concubine, entertainer, or prostitute! Lucky you!
Wife vs. Concubine. What's the big deal anyway? The wife became less powerful which made the concubines and the wife want to strangle each other.
Wait! Some Song women were educated? Why on earth would they do that? To raise their sons better. Ah, that makes sense.
Why did the Chinese interact with their nomadic neighbors to the north? To trade with them. They wanted China's goods and stuff. China wanted horses.
Why did almighty China waste their time with lowly barbarians? TO MAKE THEM CHINESE DUH
What did China call themselves? "the center of the world" or universe depending on how conceded they felt that day.
What was China's tribute system? All foreigners brought expensive gifts to the Emperor, in return bestowals were given that were worth more than the tributes that were given.
What was kowtow? Kowtowing was bowing down to the emperor twenty times. It was probably a real work out and it's probably a bad idea to make my sister kowtow every time she wants into my room.
Why did the foreigners bring the emperor tributes and kowtow? To trade with them.
Why did China give the foreigners bestowals that were often worth more than the tributes? To keep some strong neighbors near China from getting too aggressive.
Who were the Xiongnu? Nomads north of China during the Han dynasty.
What kind of deal did the Chinese and Xiongnu have set up? When they raided China, they forced a reverse tribute system.
What did the Xiongnu get in this reverse tribute system? Grain, wine, and PRINCESSES. HECK YA
Who were the Uighurs? They were Turkic, west of China.
What happened between the Uighurs and the Chinese? They rescued the Tang Dynasty from a serious internal revolt in the 750s.
After the Uighurs rescued the Tang, what kind of deal did they set up? They gained one of the Chinese emperor’s daughters as a wife and long-term trade of bad horses for good silk.
Who were the Khitan Jurchen? People in north China, that when the Tang dynasty fell they took over the fallen part.
What happened between the Khitan Jurchen and the Song dynasty? The Song sent them silk, so they wouldn't take over more land.
How did the Chinese affect the nomads culturally? In the north, nomads didn’t really take on a lot of Chinese culture. Some elite did, but they remained “different” from the Chinese.
Why did the nomads never adopt Chinese cultural? It was impossible to farm the way the Chinese did.
Which two dynasties mixed barbarian and Chinese blood? The Sui and Tang.
Politically, economically, and socially, how did Korea respond to Chinese influence? It became a vassal state and payed tribute to China. They borrowed Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, civil service system, art, and literature from China. Korea had some Chinese colonizers.

They borrowed Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, civil service system, art, and literature from China. Vietnam had some Chinese colonizers and became part of China for 1000 years.
Politically, economically, and socially, how did Japan respond to Chinese influence? Japan was never conquered, but participated as a vassal less than Korea and Vietnam. They borrowed Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, civil service system, art, and literature from China. Japan was separated by the sea from China, only borrowed a few things.
What happened to Japan in the 900s? They stopped the tribute system and started a new, independent culture.
In what ways was Vietnam more Chinese than than Japan or Korea? They adopted Confucianism, Chinese agriculture techniques, the Chinese language, hairstyles, and clothing.
How were Korean and Chinese government alike? Korean rulers got power by being aligned with China, while they modeled their capital city after the Chinese capital.
How did China affect Korean women? They lost many freedoms that they had before they came in contact with China.
How were Vietnam and Chinese government alike? They adopted Chinese government and civil service system, and based their writing on Chinese writing.
Compare Vietnam women and Korean women. Vietnam women kept more power than in Korea.
Where is Japan in relation to China? It's an island, separated from China by the sea, so it was never conquered by China.
How did Japan learn about China? They sent scholars to learn about China in the 800s.
How were Japan and Chinese government alike? Had similar capitals, but never got a unified government like China.
Were any Chinese religions adopted in Japan? Buddhism didn’t take hold like in Vietnam or Korea.
How did China affect Japanese women? They escaped most Confucianist rules.
Where were the Trung Sisters from? Vietnam. HIGH FIVE.
Why were the Trung Sisters so mad anyway? Dad was booted out and husbands were killed.
What did the Trung Sisters do in the uprising? Dressed in military clothes and addressed 30,000 Vietnamese soldiers. The uprising was crushed, so the sisters committed suicide instead of surrender. DANG VIETNAM. Still viewed as heroes in Vietnam.
Did Confucianism change Japanese women? Not really. Japanese women kept cultural ways such as remarriage, no foot binding and going out in public. Marriages were broken easily and sometimes men moved in with the family of the wives.
Did Confucianism change Korean women? Yes, like China.
How were the Japanese and Chinese governments different? Japan did not have central government, but an emperor, which lost power through the centuries.
What was one reason Japan didn't have a government like China? Local rich families had their own ways.
What were some techniques or technologies developed by the Chinese that spread to other regions of Eurasia? Salt by solar evaporation, paper making, printing, and movable type.
Movable type was easier than... writing each book by hand.
What items did China borrow from India? Cotton and sugar.
What item did China borrow from Vietnam? New rice.
The new rice from Vietnam caused what? A huge population boom.
What happened to China to make people more accepting of Buddhism? The Han dynasty fell, and the chaos that followed discredited Confucianism. They saw Buddhism as a comfort.
Did the northern nomads like Buddhism? Yes.
Did Chinese elites like Buddhism? Sure, they paid for Buddhist temples and art.
Which two dynasties supported Buddhism? Sui and Tang
How did Buddhism come to China? The silk roads.

What happened to the temples after the government said NO to Buddhism? They were destroyed or converted.
Did Buddhism drop completely after China did away with it? No, it stayed around and remains a popular religion.
What was Hangzhou? A Chinese capital, with a population of more than a million people. WHOA
Who was Shotoku Taisha? A Japanese aristocrat.
What did Shotoku Taisha do? He took hundreds of Japanese monks, scholars, artists, and students to China, and when they returned, they put into practice what they had learned.
What was the 17th Article Constitution? A constitution written by Taisha, that stated a Japanese ruler as a Chinese-style emperor and encouraged both Buddhism and Confucianism.
What was the Heian period in Japan? expression in the imperial court.
In the Heian period, what did court aristocrats do? Lived in splendor, composed poems, arranged flowers, and conducted their love affairs.
What was the Tale of Genji? A novel that provided an intimate picture of the romances of Heian court life.
Who wrote the Tale of Genji? Murasaki Shikibu, the first woman to write a novel. GO HER.
What was Pure Land Buddhism? Chinese Buddhism that was a religion with gods, salvation, and heaven.
What was the An Lushan rebellion? Resentment against foreign culture, particularly among the literate classes.
Who was the An Lushan rebellion against? The Tang Dynasty
In the Song Dynasty what rights did women have? Property rights.
What did these property rights include? The ability to inherit property from their families.
In the Song dynasty what did women lose to men? Their jobs in the textile industry.
Why did some Confucian scholars believe Song dynasty women should be educated? To better raise their sons.
Was there foot binding in the Song Dynasty? Yes
What did the barbarians want from the Chinese? Wealth and learning.
What were non-Chinese people called? Barbarians.
What was China's task to the barbarians? To enlighten them by teaching them the ways of civilization.

Who was not viewed as a political equal to China? Vietnam, Korea, and Japan.
The Xiongnu, the Uighurs, the Khitan, and the Jurchen were... Four nomadic empires to the north of China.
What do the Xiongnu, the Uighurs, the Khitan, and the Jurchen have in common? All four were able to gain large amounts of valuable goods from China, often as thinly disguised "protection money" that kept them from attacking China.
