What is an artifact? A human-made object, such as a tool, weapon, or piece of jewlery
What is a nomad? Nomads were people who traveled from place to place in search of food and water with no permanent settlement.
What occurred during the Neolithic Revolution? Early humans started farming, settled in one place, domesticated animals.
What are the characteristics of a civilization? Advanced cities, record keeping, complex institutions (government, economy, religion), advanced technology, specialized workers.
Mesopotamia was located between which two rivers? Tigris and Euphrates
How did the Tigris and Euphrates provide a good place to start a civilization? The Tigris and Euphrates would flood and deposit rich silt into the surrounding lands which made it good for farming.
What was the name of the system of writing that developed in Mesopotamia? cuneiform
What is cultural diffusion? The exchange of products and ideas between cultures.
Describe Hammurabi's Code. Hammurabi’s Code was a strict set of laws with harsh punishments. These laws were harsher for the poor.
What river was Egyptian civilization based around? The Nile River
Describe the Egyptian view of the pharaoh. Egyptians believed that the pharaoh was put in power by the gods and ruled on their behalf. The pharaoh was worshipped as god on earth.
What was the purpose of mummification? Preserve the body of the pharaoh for the afterlife and beyond.
Why were the pyramids and important part of Egyptian culture? Pyramids showed the ingenuity and advanced technology of the Egyptians. Built to house mummies.
What was the Egyptian system of writing? Hieroglyphics
What was papyrus? Papyrus was a paper product made from the papyrus plant.
What is the caste system? In Hindusim, difference in social class determined by what caste you were reincarnated in
What are monsoons? a wind that shifts in direction at certain times of each year.
What is karma? In Hindusim and Buddhism,the totality of the good and bad deeds.
what is reincarnation? In Hindusim and Buddhism are which a soul is reborn continously until it achieves perfect understanding.
What is Buddha's original name? Siddartha Gautama
What was Buddha trying to achieve? He was trying to achieve the enlightenment
What is the Dynastic Cycle? The historical pattern of the rise decline and replacement of dynastties
What is the Mandate of Heaven? Chinese history the divine approval thought to be the basis of royal authority
What is feudalism? a political system in which nobles are granted the use of lands that legally belong to their king in exchange for their loyalty ,military service and protection of the people who live on the land
What geographic features contributed to the development of Ancient Greece? The sea provided transportation and trade, the mountains made city-states independent and isolated.
Who is Homer? He wrote the lliad and the Odyssey
What is a democracy? A government controlled by citizens either directly or through representatives
What is an aristocracy? A government in which power is in the hands of the noble class
What is an oligarchy? A government in which power is in the hands of a few people
What is a monarchy? A government in which power is in the hands of a single person
Why is Alexander The Great so important? Created an empire that spread Greek culture
The Peloponnesian War was a conflict between which two city-states? Athens and Sparta
