QuestionAnswer
What is Zionism? The movement for establishing the state of Israel.
When did Zionism start? At the end of the 19th Century.
Why most Arab countries against the formation of Israel? Israel would be made out of land that they already occupied.
What promises did Britain make to Jews during WW1? They pledged to help the Jews create a 'national home' in Palestine.
What were the British hoping for when the made their promise? They hoped to rally Jewish support for the Allied war effort.
What was the problem with the two big promises that Britain made? They conflicted.
Why did so many Jews head to Palestine in the 1940s? The Holocaust.
Who announced it would pull out of Palestine (which was their mandate) in 1947? Britain.
Who decided which land would belong to the Jews and which land would belong to the Arabs—in other words, who drew up the partition plan? UN
Why didn’t the Arabs like the plan? They feared that they would become a minority, and that the influx of Judaism would cause an imbalance in their own religion.
What happened when Palestine was no longer a mandate and turned into Israel? It was invaded.
Who recognized Israel as a state? The United States and the Soviet Union
How did Israel react to the Arabs attack in 1948? They fought back and captured some areas that weren't allocated for them in the mandate
How did America Feel? We were torn.
