Renaissance Era and Age of Exploration

Who was Christopher Columbus? Italian who sailed for Spain into the west looking for a route to the Indies. Instead, he discovered the Americas
Who was Vasco da Gama? Portuguese sailor who sailed down the west coast of Africa to the west coast of India
Who was Marco Polo? A Venetian (Italian) merchant who, by land route, traveled to China where he stayed for a long time. He also had a journal published about his travels to the Orient.
Who was Prince Henry the Navigator? a Portuguese sailor who started a school of navigation for sailors.
Who was Ferdinand Magellan? A Portuguese explorer who set sail to circumnavigate the world, but who was killed in Philippines. A few of his crew made it back to Portugal--making his dream a reality.
Who was Francisco Pizarro? A Spanish explorer who conquered the Inca Empire.
who was Bartolomeu Diaz? He was a Portuguese explorer who traveled down the west coast of Africa to the tip, calling it the Cape of Good Hope.
Who was Zheng He? He was a Chinese explorer who traveled as far west (from China) to the eastern coast of Africa. In all, he made 7 trips.
Who was Amerigo Vespucci? He was an explorer who first sailed to the tip of South America, and also, for whom America is named.
Who were King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella? The Spanish royal family that funded the expeditions of Christopher Columbus.
The reason why early explorers looked for a new sea route to the Far East was because... to make it cheaper, quicker, and safer than traveling over land and being attacked, paying outrageous taxes, and making a bigger profit.
Why did Spain and Portugal come to odds? They both were greedy and wanted the entire world for themselves.
Who helped to end the dispute between Spain and Portugal? the Pope helped by giving each of them 1/2 of the world's lands.
What was the Columbian Exchange? The century long period in history where Europeans and people of the Americas traded ideas, foods, diseases, and religious beliefs.
What kinds of things were exchanged in the Columbian Exchange? potatoes, corn, peas and other vegetables as well as diseases, ideas and other resources
What was a conquistador? A conqueror of lands.
What 3 "G"s did the conquistadors come to America for in the beginning? God, gold, and glory
Why did Catholic religious leaders come to the New World with the explorers? To convert the Native Americans to Christianity
How did the Native Americans respond to the push for conversion to being Catholic? They first resisted. Then because anyone who was known to be Catholic could not be enslaved, the Native Americans converted willingly
What period in history did the Renaissance follow? The Medieval Era
Between what years did the Renaissance occur? 1450 and 1800
Where did the Renaissance begin and where did it spread? It started in the northern city-states of Italy, but then spread southward as well as to other European countries.
Machiavelli wrote what GOVERNMENTAL support book? Machiavelli wrote it.
What content was found in The Prince, and who didn't like its information. Negative views of citizens. The information within the book told governmental leaders to do whatever was necessary to maintain control.
what is "humanism"? The idea and practice looking at the whole person as being real and having human qualities in all aspects of their surroundings
What was a true "Renaissance Man" considered to be like? He a man a cultured man of the Renaissance who was knowledgeable, educated, or proficient in a wide range of fields.
Who was Johannes Gutenberg? He invented the world's first printing press, and he also translated the King James version of the Bible into German.
Who was Leonardo da Vinci? He was a Renaissance artist, inventor, among many other fields. He also painted the piece known as "Mona Lisa".
Who was Michelangelo? He was a Renaissance artist and painter who completely painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Who were the Medicis? The most well-known ruling family of the Renaissance Era. They mostly resided in the city-state of Florence.
Who was William Shakespeare? He was a Renaissance playwright who was famous for writing pieces of drama that was then acted out in the form of a play.
What were some of the areas in which people of the Renaissance excelled? things that included the following: art, literature, education, architecture, and music.
