| Charles V | King of Spain in 1516; Holy Roman Emperor. Struggled to keep territories within his empire under control. Gave his son Philip II and his brother control. |
| Peace of Augsburg | An agreement that gave each German Prince the right to decide whether his state would be Protestant or Catholic. |
| Philip II | Son of Charles V; went bankrupt and was a devout Catholic. |
| El Greco | One of the most prominent painters; was Greek, most of his work was religious and reflected central role in the Counter Reformation. |
| Diego Velazquez | Spanish painter; created masterpieces that portray people of all social classes, had the privelege of being the Court painter. |
| Miguel de Carvante | Greatest writer of the golden age, most famous work os Don Quixote de la Mancha; about a man caught between medieval and modern worlds. |
| Sister Jauna Ines de la Cruz | A mexican nun who wrote poetry, prose and plays, critized by church officials because of her belief that women had the right to education. |
