| Headright System | Colonists who paid their way into Virginia received 50 acres of land. A colonist earned another 50 acres for every additional person brought from England. |
| Indentured Servant | A colonist who received a free pass to America in exchange for working without pay for several years. |
| Toleration Act of 1649 | A Maryland law that made restricting the religious rights of Christians a crime; the first law guaranteeing religious freedom to be passed in America. |
| Royal Colony | A colony founded and controlled by the king. |
| Proprietary Colony | The colony's proprietors, or owners, controlled the government. |
