Feudalism A social system used throughout Europe during the Middle Ages with strict social classes.
Absolutism The believe that kings had the authority to rule without limits on Their power
Divine Right A belief that kings received their power to rule from God.
Estate A social class in France during the 1700’s
Guillotine A machine invented by Dr. Joseph Ignace Guillotin in 1792 used to execute criminals by quick decapitation.
Coup d’état “Blow to the State”, which means taking power by using military force.
Napoleonic Code A set of laws placed by Napoleon Bonaparte in which he allowed freedom of religion & ended feudal privileges, but denied freedom of speech & of the press.
Continental System When in 1806 Napoleon set up a blockade – forcible closing of ports- to prevent trade & communication between G. Britain & the rest of Europe.
Scorched-earth policy Military strategy used by Russia against Napoleon’s troops involving burning crop fields & slaughtering livestock so as to leave nothing for the enemy to eat.
Guerrillas Peasant fighters working in small groups, ambushing the enemy & then going into hiding.
Exile To deport someone out of his/her own country.
Congress of Vienna A series of meetings that took place in Vienna where European leaders met to create peace & stability in Europe after Napoleon’s defeat.
