What are the Drives to explore? Fame and Glory Searching for Wealth Curiosity Hope to spread Faith to New Lands
Who was Henry the Navigator? Prince Henry; son of King John I of Portugal.
How was Henry the Navigator involved in exploration? A patron and supporter of those who wished to explore; was not an explorer.
What did Henry do in the 1400s? Established a small court to which he brought sailors, mapmakers, astronomers and others who were interested in navigation.
What was Henry's ultimate goal? To find a water root around Africa to India.
Compass Allows explorers to navigate North, South, East and West; could plot courses when land was out of sight.
Astrolabe Allowed explorers to caculate location from stars and sun; were more willing to take risks.
Shipbuilding Rode lower in water, capable of withstanding heavier waves; could carry more supplies and more sturdy in rough tides.
Caravel A light, fast sailing ship with a rudder at the rear, triangular sails that could make the ship go in any direction and travel accurately; easily maneuvered and most popular transportation.
Weapons Canons could now be placed on ships, helped to fight enemies and protect the ship, made caravel most popular ship for exploration; helped fight enemies on other ships.
