The ameboid movement of blood cells (especially leukocytes) through the wall of capillary and out into the tissues. Diapedesis
The study of blood and blood-forming tissues. Hematology
The protein-and iron- containing pigment of erythrocytes and transports oxygen in the body. Hemoglobin
The breakdown of erythrocytes with the release of hemoglobin into the plasma. Hemolysis
A red blood cell with a decreased concentration of hemoglobin. Hypochromic
An abnormal increase in the number of white blood cells (greater than 11,000 per cubic millimeter of blood). Leukocytosis
A abnormal decrease in the number of white blood cells (less than 4500 per cubic millimeter of blood). Leukopenia
An abnormally small red blood cell. Microcytic
An abnormally large red blood cell. Macrocytic
A red blood cell with a normal concentration of hemoglobin. Normochromic
A normal-sized red blood cell. Normocytic
Hemoglobin that has combined with oxygen. Oxyhemoglobin
The engulfing and destruction of foreign particles, such as bacteria, by special cells called phagocytes. Phagocytosis
A disorder in which there is an increase in the red blood cell mass. Polycythemia
