Question | Answer |
Extension | Adjacent bones move apart increasing angle between them. Return of body parts to anatomical position. |
Flexion | Adjacent bones move together, thereby decreasing angle between them. |
Hyperextension | Extension movement continued beyond anotomical position. |
Hyperflexion | Flexion movement continued beyond normal range of motion. |
Abduction | Arms or legs move away from midline of body. |
Adduction | Arms and legs move towards midline of body. |
Horizontal abduction | Movement of humerus in the transverse plane away from the midline. |
Horizontal Adduction | Movement of the humerus in the transverse plane toward the midline. |
Rotation | Body part moves on its own axis. |
Circumduction | Body part moves in a full circular path. Combines Flexion, Adduction, extension, and Adduction in sequential order. |
Lateral Flexion | Head or torso bends to the side. (laterally) |
Retraction | Medial movement on a plane parellel to ground. (Adduction of scapula) |
Protraction | Lateral movement on a plane parellel to ground. (abduction of scapula) |
Elevation | Moving to a superior position. I.e. shrugging shoulders |
Depression | Moving to an inferior position (scapula) I.e. dropping the shoulder |
Dorsiflexion | Top of foot moves towards the shin. |
Plantar Flexion | Top of foot moves away from shin. |
Eversion | Sole of foot faces outward. |
Inversion | Sole of foot faces inward. |
