cardiovascular (CV) system | aka circulatory system, comprised of the heart & blood vessels |
primary function of CV | delivers oxygen, nutrients and other essential substances to cells of the body; removes waste products of cellular metabolism |
heart | muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body |
4 chambers of heart | RA (right atrium), RV (right ventricle), LA (left atrium), LV (left ventricle) |
arteries | carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the body through the aorta |
arteries | branch into smaller vessels called arterioles |
veins | return deoxygenated blood from the capillaries to heart through IVC (inferior ven cava) & SVC (superior vena cava) |
veins | branch into smaller vessels called venules |
aorta | largest artery |
capillaries | contain venous & anterial blood |
capillaries | where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place |
blood pressure | force exerted by blood on the arterial walls |
systole | when the heart contracts and forces blood out of the heart |
distole | when the heart relaxes allowing blood to refill the heart |
