Standard Precautions (Universal Precautions) | Developed by CDC. Used at all times to prevent contact with blood or other potentially infectious body fluid. All Patients - Are considered potentially infectious. Every body fluid - Is treated as being potentially infectious. |
Infectious Body Fluids | May include: Blood or fluid that may contain blood. Body fluids, secretion, excretions - ex: saliva, vomit, feces, urine, mucus. |
Bloodborne Pathogen Standards | Pathogen - ds causing organism. HIV, HBV, and HCV. |
BBP Standards | Established by OSHA in 1991. Must be follow by HCF. Employer faces penalties if regualtions are not implemented and followed (money). |
BBP Requireed Regulations | Developed a written ECP (exposure control plan) - update annually. Identify all employers at risk for BBP exposure. Provide HBV vaccine. Provide adequate handwashing facilites/supplies. Ensure worksite is maintained - clean and sanitary. |
BBP Regulations Continued | Provide PPE: Gloves (single use), Mask (change every 30 min. or when moist), protective eye wear, face shield, lab coat, gown, and a CPR Mask. |
BBP Regualtions Continued | Dispose of infectious waste correctly. Biohazard - labeled with red/orange. Containers. Laundry bags - "hadle with care" - for contaminated linens. Sharps containers - do not reuse, do not open. Sent to medical waste facility for proper disposal |
Needle Stick Law | Provide confidential follow up for exposure incident. Needle stick - alternative to recapping needles. Never recap needles. Splashing. Report all exposures immediately. |
More Handwashing | Protect health care workers from disease and illness. Hands are perfect media for spread of pathogens. |
If Exposed | Use 10% bleach solution. |
