Plane | Description |
coronal plane | vertical plane that divides the entire body into front and back sections. |
dorsal supine position | patient is lying with the posterior section of the body down. |
prone position | patient is lying with the anterior section of the body down. |
midsagittal plane | vertical plane that divides the entire body into right and left sections. |
medial direction | moving from the side of the body twoard the midline. |
lateral direction | moving from the midline toward the side of the body. |
transverse plane | horizontal plane that divides the entire body into top and bottom sections. |
cephalad direction | moving toward the head. |
caudad direction | moving downward toward the lower extremities. |
distal direction | moving from the body toward the end of a limb (arm or leg). |
proximal direction | moving from the end of a limb toward its attachment. |
frontal plane | another name for the coronal plane. |
horizontal plane | another name for the transverse plane. |
prone position | lying with belly side down. |
supine position | lying with belly side up. |
