PlaneDescription
coronal plane vertical plane that divides the entire body into front and back sections.
dorsal supine position patient is lying with the posterior section of the body down.
prone position patient is lying with the anterior section of the body down.
midsagittal plane vertical plane that divides the entire body into right and left sections.
medial direction moving from the side of the body twoard the midline.
lateral direction moving from the midline toward the side of the body.
transverse plane horizontal plane that divides the entire body into top and bottom sections.
cephalad direction moving toward the head.
caudad direction moving downward toward the lower extremities.
distal direction moving from the body toward the end of a limb (arm or leg).
proximal direction moving from the end of a limb toward its attachment.
frontal plane another name for the coronal plane.
horizontal plane another name for the transverse plane.
prone position lying with belly side down.
supine position lying with belly side up.
