| Plane | Description |
|---|---|
| coronal plane | vertical plane that divides the entire body into front and back sections. |
| dorsal supine position | patient is lying with the posterior section of the body down. |
| prone position | patient is lying with the anterior section of the body down. |
| midsagittal plane | vertical plane that divides the entire body into right and left sections. |
| medial direction | moving from the side of the body twoard the midline. |
| lateral direction | moving from the midline toward the side of the body. |
| transverse plane | horizontal plane that divides the entire body into top and bottom sections. |
| cephalad direction | moving toward the head. |
| caudad direction | moving downward toward the lower extremities. |
| distal direction | moving from the body toward the end of a limb (arm or leg). |
| proximal direction | moving from the end of a limb toward its attachment. |
| frontal plane | another name for the coronal plane. |
| horizontal plane | another name for the transverse plane. |
| prone position | lying with belly side down. |
| supine position | lying with belly side up. |
