Kinesiology | The study of the movement (especially of the human body), involving bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. |
Fascia | A particular type of connective tissue which spreads throughout the body from head to toe and from skin to the deepest bones. It helps to support and shape the body. |
Effleurage | A long gliding massage stroke designed to spread lubricant, increase circulation, and warm tissue for deeper work. |
Fibromyalgia | A condition which causes lack of or poor sleep and characteristic muscle pain. |
Myofascial Release | A trademarked technique which treats the muscular fascia of the body. |
Perfomance Assessments | A form of evaluation that is required four times during the program where a student gives a massage to a licensed instructor. The purpose is to assess for areas of weakness, acknowledge areas of progress or accomplishment, and to grade for academic record |
Ipsilateral Roation | When a muscle turns the front of your body or head to the same side (muscle on right turns you right, left side to left) |
Drain | A long gliding massage stroke (form of effleurage designed to flush toxins and normal metabolic waste into your bloodstream so your body may remove them. |
Boney Landmark | A uniquely shaped part of a bone, either raised or sunken in, which is used as a reference point to locate where muscles attach to bones. |
Draping | The covering of a client with a sheet, blanket, or towel. |
Tapotement | A massage stroke which is percussive, rhythmic, and quick. It is designed to loosen mucus and stimulate the nervous system. |
Petrissage | A massage stroke designed to loosen and soften muscle after it has been warmed. |
Swedish Massage | A system of massage developed in Sweden which is widely used at the basis for teaching and practicing massage. It is designed forrelaxation but may be varied for different effects. |
Indications | Something which would indicate that massage or certain massage strokes are okay to use, or even particularly beneficial for a client goal or condition. |
Contraindications | Something which would indicate that massage is not acceptable for a client: certain massage strokes, or massage at all. |
