mouth (buccal cavity) | receives food as it enters the body; food is tasted, broken down by teeth, lubricated, and swallowed |
teeth | special structures in the mouth that physically break down food by chewing and grinding; process is called mastication |
tongue | muscular organ that contains special receptors, called taste buds' the taste buds allow a person to taste sweet, salt, sour, and bitter sensations |
hard palate | bony structure that forms the roof of the mouth, separates mouth from nasal cavity |
soft palate | behind hard palate, and separates mouth from the nasopharynx |
salivary glands | theres 3 pairs, parotid, sublingual, and submandibular, and produce liquid in mouth called saliva |
pharynx | tube in throat that carries food, water, and air |
esophagus | muscular tube dorsal to the trachea, tube carries bolus to stomach, does involuntary movement to move food forward called peristalsis |
stomach | enlarged part of alimeter canal, recieves food from esophagus, digests food through complex system |
small intestine | coiled up section of allimentary canal, divided into three sections |
duodenum | first nine to ten inches of small intestine |
jejunum | eight feet, forms middle sections of small intestines |
