oral prep stage | lips close, bolus held by tongue (tipper or dipper), rotary chew, and velum lowers |
oral transfer | tongue progressively elevates anteriorly to posteriorly, groove created on tongue for bolus to travel on, material reaches area between faucial arches and where mandible crosses base of tongue |
pharyngeal stage | velopharyngeal musculature elevates, tongue base retracts towards pharyngeal wall, hoid elevates, larynx (true, false, aryepiglottic folds) close, larynx elevates and moves forward pulling the UES open |
Esophageal Stage | UES pulled open, muscles in esophagus relax and contract in wavelike motion (peristalsis), LES relaxes and opens. |
