Description of the stages of the swallow

oral prep stage lips close, bolus held by tongue (tipper or dipper), rotary chew, and velum lowers
oral transfer tongue progressively elevates anteriorly to posteriorly, groove created on tongue for bolus to travel on, material reaches area between faucial arches and where mandible crosses base of tongue
pharyngeal stage velopharyngeal musculature elevates, tongue base retracts towards pharyngeal wall, hoid elevates, larynx (true, false, aryepiglottic folds) close, larynx elevates and moves forward pulling the UES open
Esophageal Stage UES pulled open, muscles in esophagus relax and contract in wavelike motion (peristalsis), LES relaxes and opens.
