Croup | an acute respiratory syndrome in children and infants characterized by obstruction of the larynx, hoarseness, and a barking cough |
Pertussis | a contagious bacterial infection of the upper respirtory tract that is characterized by a paroxysmal cough; aka whooping cough |
Diphtheria | an acute infectious disease of the throat and upper respiratory tract caused by the presence of diphtheria bacteria |
Bronchitis | inflammation of the bronchial walls |
Tuberculosis | an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that usually attacks the lungs |
Pneumonia | inflammation of the lungs in which the air sacs fill with pus and other liquid |
Asthma | a chronic allergic disorder characterized by episodes of severe breathing difficulty, coughing, and wheezing |
Pulmonary embolism | the obstruction of pulmonary arteries caused by a blood clot that traveled from the leg to the lung |
COPD | chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; a general term used to describe a group of respiratory conditions characterized by chronic airflow limitations |
Cystic Fibrosis | a genetic disorfer in which the lungs are clogged with large quantities of abnormally thick mucus and the digestive system is impaired by thick gluelike mucus that interferes with digestive juices |
Pneumothorax | an accumulation of air or gas in the pleural space causing the lung to collapse |
Laryngoscopy | visual examination of the interior of the abdomen with the use of a laparoscope |
Bronchoscopy | visual examination of the bronchi using a bronchoscope |
Sputum specimen | couging up phlem to be used for study purposes |
Chest x-ray | xray of the chest to allow for a more in depth vision of the respiratory system |
Lung scan | a nuclear scanning test that is most commonly used to detect a pulmonary embolism |
Pulmonary function tests | a group of tests that measure the capacity of the lungs to hold air, their ability to move air in and out, and their ability to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide |
Thoracentesis | puncture of the chest wall with a needle to obtain fluid from the pleural cavity for diognostic purposes, to drain pleural effusions, or to reexpand a collapsed lung |
Tracheostomy | an emergency procedure in which an incision is made into the trachea to gain access to the airway below a blockage |
Bronchodilator | medication that expands the opening of the passages into the lungs |
Pneumonectomy | surgical removal of all or part of a lung |
Ventilator | device used for artificial breathing |
